West LRT Back on Council’s Agenda – Tuesday, December 15

On December 15th city council will be holding another public hearing for bylaw 15101 which includes the proposed West LRT line down Stony Plain Road. City adminstration is recommending that council both remove the 87th avenue route from consideration, and pass the bylaw as is. The Glenwood Community League will be represented at the hearing, but given city administrations strong push to exclude alternate routes in favor of the Stony Plain Road corridor, it’s important that as residents of the Glenwood Community, you continue to make your concerns known.

Below are links to a template letter, contact information for city council, a presentation we made to council at the last public hearing, LRT related news articles, and our West LRT page.

West LRT Expansion

Edmonton Journal – West LRT, Letter to the Editor

87th Avenue best route for LRT

As an active participant in the West LRT debate, I read with interest Paula Simon’s latest foray into advocacy for the Stony Plain Road LRT corridor. When the proposed amendments to bylaw 15101 started piling up last Friday, it seemed obvious that council was unprepared for two days of significant, well researched, and well-spoken opposition to the Stony Plain Road route.

Since the start of what’s been a long, drawn out, and frequently delayed process for selecting a corridor for much needed and long-overdue light-rail expansion, there’s been no shortage of idealogical arguments for the SPR “everything to everybody” route. “It’s a people mover, a commuter route, a revitalization engine for downtown and the Jasper Place area, a streetcar like system to encourage shopping, dining, and walkability like Portland’s Pearl district, the route of the future, a round-the-city link from Millwoods to WEM. But there’s no consensus.”

Derelict Property in Glenwood Demolished

A notorious derelict property in the Glenwood Community, allowed to remain a hazard, an eyesore, and a disturbing nuisance in the community for well over a year and a half, despite repeated attempts by the League and neighboring residents to have the property cleaned up and the lot secured, was finally demolished today.

As we mentioned in the notice in the SPURR regarding the upcoming public hearing for the proposed LRT route, given the large body of opposition in the community to the proposed West LRT corridor, we have prepared a template letter (link below) summarizing a number of concerns regarding the route and the unanswered questions surrounding it.

(Glenwood Related) Kids, check your candy bags for lost wedding ring – By Cigdem Iltan, edmontonjournal.com

EDMONTON — A trick-or-treater who stopped at James Fearn’s house Saturday night collected Oh Henry bars, lollipops — and one gold ring.

That last item was an accident.

Fearn’s left hand was swollen from a recent fall so he switched his wedding band to his right pinky finger, the only other finger it fit.

“I was getting handfuls of suckers and chocolate bars and filling up my hands using both hands and I’m afraid this thing was a little on the loose side,” he said. “Somebody’s got my wedding ring.”

About 45 to 50 costumed kids stopped by Fearn’s Glenwood home on Halloween, in the area of 163rd Street and 95th Avenue. Fearn didn’t recognize any of the children and doesn’t know who might have it.
