Please join us for coffee or tea – you could win a $50 gift card for Sandylane Meat Shop (in Glenwood) or a $50 gas card from Petro Canada!

We require a certain number of community residents to have enough people to vote our executive in.  Please consider attending even if you cannot volunteer for any executive positions.  You must be in attendance to win the gift cards.

Please come out and join us at the meeting.  It is open to everyone living in Glenwood in apartments, condos and houses whether you rent or own your home.

This year we have also have an interesting event happening in conjunction with our AGM!

Have you heard of the Sensational Game “GO”?
Following the AGM there will be a presentation on the game of GO by some experienced GO players. You will be fascinated to discover why GO is the most popular board game of skill in the world. It is not only fun for all ages but teaches many mental skills such as patience and perseverance. It can be peaceful but in reality it is a struggle between 2 players to control territory on a 19 by 19 grid between black stones and white stones.

We invite you to come and see and even try a small board game.  Weekly sessions will follow on Wednesdays starting on April 20th with instruction and games.  Adults and children ages 6 and up are welcome to attend, and residents of neighbouring communities are also welcome. Make friends. Have fun. Learn.

Citizens Speak – But is Council Listening? – by Gordon Kent

West LRT Update

City Council has approved a final conceptual design plan for the WLRT Lewis Estates-Downtown Corridor.  The approved plan does not incorporate any changes to the Jasper Place area from earlier drafts which were made available to the public.  The Glenwood CL is dissapointed that none of our recommendations regarding traffic flow, and business/residential access were incorporated in Council’s final decision. For more information, visit Edmonton.ca/LRTprojects

With this decision made, the League will be focusing it’s civic involvement on advancing the goals of the Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy, and pursuing a statutory land-use plan (Area Redevelopment Plan) for the Glenwood Community, in order to manage current and future redevelopment pressures.  We will be working closely with the West Edmonton Community Council and Jasper Place Revitalization Steering Committee on these efforts.

Schools Closures

On Tuesday, November 30th, EPSB Trustees voted 7-2 for renewable two-year moratorium on school closures.  10 speakers also addressed the board in support of the motion (Glenwood’s presentation is below).   This is an opportunity to work towards enhancing the viability of neighborhood schools in mature communities that we intend to take full advantage of.

Pawn Shop/Pay Day Loan Development Application

This past month the Glenwood CL received notice that a Development Permit has been approved for 10060-156st to change the current use from “General Retail” to Minor Second Hand Store (Pawn Shop) with an Accessory Professional, Financial and Office Support Service (Pay Day Loans).  The notice and a map of the location are available below.

This application clearly runs contrary to the goals of the Jasper Place Revitalization and Stony Plain Road Business Revitalization Zone, and would likely be in violation of the Custom Commercial Overlay prescribed for future application on the Stony Plain Road corridor in the Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy.  The league executive has filed an appeal and we are preparing for a hearing date before the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board on either the 14th, or 16th of December.

For more information check back here, or watch your email inbox if you are on the Glenwood mailing list.

The Glenwood League Executive has been active in the WLRT debate over the past year, and has decided to take that involvement in a new direction, as we will be pursuing an amendment to the West LRT Route.  Where the current corridor has both tracks situated on Stony Plain Road, the league will be pursuing an alternative which would place one track on 100th Avenue and the other on Stony Plain Road.  Watch our West LRT page for further updates and information.
