Schools in Mature Communities – EPSB December Update

The Edmonton Public School Board has begun a process to look at consolidating, renovating and possibly constructing new schools within Edmonton’s mature communities. The Glenwood community is part of the “Westlawn” working group, looking at options for the following schools:

  • Westlawn
  • Afton
  • Glendale
  • Sherwood

For more info, visit this page at EPSB.ca

About the working group:

The District asked representatives of important stakeholder groups to participate on a working committee. This committee will provide feedback as we develop several options for a community-driven strategy for the Westlawn area. The working committee includes:

  • school principals
  • District staff
  • parents (one or two from each school)
  • community representatives (one from each community league)

The committees will meet between October 2016 and February 2017 to develop a plan. In spring 2017, the plan will be presented at a public meeting for feedback from the community.

Westlawn Working Group Update

NOVEMBER 30, 2016 MEETING NOTES

The committee reviewed data to get a better understanding of the students and the community the schools serve. Committee members looked at the data and identified trends or information relevant to our process, as well as other ideas not provided in the data. This information will be used in our next meeting, December 15, 2016, to form new concepts to share with the community in March 2017.

Seniors’ Health & Wellness Forum – October 29th

Winter is coming… May have already been here for a little while.

From the City of Edmonton

Winter sidewalk maintenance – Keep Your Sidewalks Safe

Snow and ice on sidewalks is hazardous for everyone. People with limited mobility, seniors, children and parents with strollers (and even those with no mobility limitations at all) may be severely injured from a fall on ice or snow.

Uncleared walkways can also make it difficult for those who deliver services in our city—mail carriers, meter readers, delivery drivers and emergency personnel—to do their jobs safely. In fact, each year, hospitals and doctors’ offices are filled with people young and old who have slipped and fallen on poorly maintained  sidewalks.

What is my role?

Community Standards Bylaw 14600 requires homeowners and tenants to clear snow and ice from every walk and driveway on or beside their property. Don’t forget about any other properties they own, including derelict and vacant buildings–they may have sidewalks that need to be shovelled too.

Use sand or ice-melting products to start the clearing process if you can’t shovel immediately after a snowfall. The fine for failing to clear sidewalks within 48 hours of the last snowfall is $100, so save yourself the money and get it done!

My neighbours haven’t been shovelling their walk. What can I do?

If you have a concern about a neighbour’s uncleared walk:

  • Discuss the concern directly with your neighbour.

  • Be a Snow Angel by offering to help them keep it clear if needed. Find out more at edmonton.ca/snowangels.

  • Record the address of the violation and a description of the problem if you can’t resolve the problem directly with your neighbour.

  • Call 311 or register a complaint online at edmonton.ca. You will be asked to provide your name, address, phone number and the details of your concern in case your testimony is required in court.*

*Complaints are accepted between November 1 and May 1, and only when it has not snowed for at least 48 hours.

Party in the Park – Recap

Our annual community party and membership drive was bigger and better than ever this year, hosted jointly with our neighbour just to the south, the Meadowlark Community League! Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the day, to our Board member Shannon Nichols for once again coordinating the planning for Party in the Park, to the Glenwood Grizzlies hockey team for keeping the grill going all day, and to the many volunteers from two communities who helped make this possible. Thank you as well to Edmonton bands White Lightning and AM Radio for providing the rocking live music all day. See you next year in the park!

From the city’s ARP team:

Hello all,

We have a few project updates we wanted to share with you.

New website look

You may have noticed a new look to the Jasper Place ARP website. The updated site documents the process we undertook together to create the Jasper Place ARP for future reference by residents and City staff.
New video
We’re excited to share a tailor-made video showcasing key aspects of the Plan. It provides a quick introduction to the ARP and an overview of some of the main policies.

We want your input – again!

Throughout the ARP process, we learned from three key inputs – existing City policy, technical studies, and community input. We couldn’t have done it without your feedback and we’re very grateful to everyone who contributed their time, energy and ideas to building a successful vision for Jasper Place.

We’d now like to know what you thought of the consultation process – what went well and what we can do differently next time. Our online survey will be available for your input until December 13, 2015 – we look forward to your feedback!

Thanks again for your contributions throughout the ARP process.

Sincerely,

Jasper Place ARP Team

A Green Shack for All Seasons!
